Japanese inns, Onsen inns. One is the large bath for guests where you take
bath with other guests of the Japanese inn.
Another populer one is open-air (outside)bath, Rotenburo, which is located
outside of Onsen inn building.
Rotenburo is sometimes available on a private basis.
Private open-air bath can be classified into two types.
One is a private open-air bath attached to guest's room.
Another type is not attached to guest rooms, it is situated independently
and will be used for particular guests who booked the open-air bath
for a specific period of time, for one or two hours. It is called as
" Kashikiri-Rotenburo."
This facility can be booked at the time of room booking Onsen inn.
In addition, guest rooms have a small bath which is supplied with
hot spring water. If you don't like to share the bathing facility with other
guests, you can use your room's bath.
It is common to use the large hot spring bath separately for men
and women.
There is indication on the sex of users, such as " Otoko-yu"
meaning the bath for men and "Onna-yu" showing the bath for
women.
It has to be noted that there are some open-air bathing facilities
where the mixed bathing by men and women are allowed.
These facilities are called as"Konyoku" meaning mixed bathing.
Is it lucky?! Historically speaking, hot springs have been used
to care diseases and physical problems. Today, there are many
hot springs to accept such visitors for health care purposes.
At such hot springs, accommodations with reasonable room
charges for long period stay are facilitated.
Those accommodations have kitchen facilities for cooking by guests
themselves.
We call this type of hot spring care as " Toji."
