maid at around 2000-3000yen (1000yen per visitor for the room).
If the service charge is included in the room charge, it is not
necessary.
7) Total charges: charges vary basically by grade of Ryokan and
number of persons who share the room.

Common charges : 10000-20000yen per person, including
dinner and breakfast

Reception procedures and use of hot spring bath:
At the reception desk of the Ryokan, you will have a room key
and your room's made shows the way to your room. The room
maid will explain about your room and the time/place for dinner
and breakfast.
Also, it is an important information that where is the hot spring bath.
At Ryokan, visitors use the hot spring bath. Many Ryokans have
Roten-buro (Hot spring bath located outside). The maid will tell us the
place of the Roten-buro. The hot spring bath facility is separated
for men(Otoko-yu) and women(Onna-yu).

Bed-making at Ryokan:
At Ryokan, bed is Japanese style and " Futon" (Japanese mattress)
will be extended on the Tatami mat(on the floor). it will done by
your room' maid while you are having dinner. It is possible to ask
the western style bed room, but it is a good occasion to sleep on
floor with Futon bed. If you like western bed, ask for it at the time
of room booking. Some Ryokans do not have western bed.

Dinner at Ryokan:
Dinner at Ryokan is served in your room or in the dining room.
Your maid will tell you where you may take your dinner.
Dinner is the delighted time for the visitors. Japanese visitors
choose the Ryokan for the sake of enjoying the dinner served
by the Ryokan. One of the important competitive points among
the Ryokans is the menu of the dinner. Good dinner attracts
many visitors.
You can see Japanese group tours staying at Ryokan. They have
party at dinner time in party room (Hiroma-hall room). The
party continues for two hours with Karaoke.
It is custom to take hot spring bath after arriving at Ryokan and
change your cloth to Yukata wear (it is provided by Ryokan
and you find it in the wear-tray in your room.), and then start
the dinner. When you go to hot spring bath, you have to lock
your room's key and carry it with you. Don't leave valuable articles
in your room. There is a small safe in your room or depository at the
front office.

In the morning, breakfast will be served in your room or dining room.
Maid of your room will come and say " Asagohan no goyoi ga dekima-
shita" which means the breakfast is ready. As for the place for taking
breakfast, the maid will tell you at the time of arrival.

Traditional Japanese breakfast includes:
1 Yakizakana: a slice of broiled(baked) fish
2 Hiyayakko: chilled bean card
3 Nori: a few sheets of seasoned laver
4 Tamagoyaki: a few slices of roasted/cooked egg

bowel of rice. Usually, a container of rice is provided.)

A typical breakfast at Ryokan

If you wish to have western style breakfast, you may tell it to your
maid or Inn's reception staff. The Japanese Inns have no problem in
preparing the western style breakfast.
Recent years, the Japanese Inns serve both Japanese dishes and western
dishes for breakfast and the visitors can choose their favorite dishes
among of them.

Other tips for staying at Japanese Inn, Ryokan

1 At the entrance of Ryokan, you take off your shoes and change into
slippers which will be provided by Ryokan. Your shoes will be handled
by maid to keep them in shoes box.

2 Check-in procedures are the same for western style, you fill in the
Ryokan's guest registration form.

3 Your maid will show you the way to your room.

4 You have to take off your slippers before you step on the tatami
( straw mat) floor in your room.

5 On the table in your room, usually, green tea and some confectionery
might be provided. You put the green tea bag into tea cup and pour
hot water using the tea pot.

6 Japanese people use a large bath in the Ryokan before dinner, so you will
pick up your Yukata robe(summer kimono)and towel which are provided
by the Inn and go to the large bath. The place of the large bath will be
guided by your maid. Some Japanese Inns have Roten-buro( outdoor
bath).

7 Your maid will serve your dinner in your room. Some Inns serve it in dining
room. Ask about the Inn's system when you make booking. It is fun to have
Japanese dinner in your room.

8 When you finished your dinner, you may use the house phone to ask
for cleaning up the table and the maid will come to do it and prepare
the Futon bedding for you.
