Visiting Japanese House
1 Appointed Time
When you are invited to Japanese house, visit on time.
It is an important courtesy to keep the appointed time in Japanese
society.
2 At the entrance:
You will exchange greetings and express thanks for their invitation.
You should take off your shoes at the entrance.
Slippers may be provided there and you may take it.
Some Japanese houses do not have slippers. In that instance, you may step into
without slippers, in socks or barefoot.
Historically speaking, Japanese people did not use slippers as all of the rooms
of traditional Japanese houses are matted with Tatami mats.
2 In the Tatami mats room:
You should take off slippers in the Tatami mats room.
It means that you should step onto tatami mats in socks or barefoot.
3 In the toilet:
There will be slippers for the toilet room.
So change your slippers to that one in the toilet, leaving your slippers
outside the toilet.
Except old Japanese houses, toilet facility in Japanese houses is westernized,
accordingly there is no problem for the use of it.
Tipping
Tipping is not done in Japan.
However, at Ryokan(Japanese Inn), you may pay tip to Nakaisan (waitress who is in
charge of your room) and usual amount is 2000-3000yen.
It is a manner to hand the tip enclosed in an envelop over to your waitress.
First rate hotels and some restaurants charge service fee (5-10 percent of
your bill).
Public Bath House: Sento and Super Sento
Entrance to a Public Bath House
In the past, Japanese apartments did not have bathroom itself, thus the public
bath houses ( called " Sento")were the basic facility for urban residents.
Today, apartments are usually equipped with bathroom.
Demands for the Sento are declining, and the number of traditional Sento is
declining as well. However, we can see the traditional Sento and can take bath
there, even in Tokyo.
Recently the Super Sento has become a new business that facilitates various
types of bathing rooms and facilities for relaxation.
Traditional Sento:
There are public bath houses with shop curtain(Noren) indicating Yu(meaning
Hot water or bath).
When entering the bath house, you have to make sure that you are taking
the right entrance, as there are two entrances, one for men and another
for women. At the entrance, you pay the bathing charge, 400 yen for adults.
When you use Sento, you have to carry with you towel and soup. If you
don't have it you can buy them at Sento at reasonable prices.
In the changing room, you undress and your clothes will be kept in the
clothes locker. The next room is the tiled bathroom with large bathing tubs.
In bathroom at Sento, you sit in front of a tap and take shower on your
head by using a plastic stool and a plastic bowl.
It is a rule to wash yourself there before getting into the large bathing tub.
