Train

Trains in Japan

Japan is one of the countries in the world which have well networked railways covering the whole country. Railways in Japan are operated by the JR(Japan Railways) and other private railroad companies.
The JR was the government owned railway service organization and was divided into seven regional railway companies. Still today, the JR group is the major railway service provider.

The JR group operates the Shinkansen" Bullet Train" and it has three Shinkansen lines, namely, Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen (serving between Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka and Fukuoka on Kyusyu Island), Jiyouetsu Shinkansen (connecting between Tokyo and Nigata) and Tohoku Shinkansen( serving between Tokyo and Hachinohe, Aomori Pref., northern part of Honsyu Main Island).
Recently, it is possible to get Shinkansen at Shinagawa Station. People living in western part of Tokyo may use Shinagawa Station to get Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen. Shinagawa Station is on the Yamanote Loop Line.

Shinkansen has reserved seats and non reserved seats. The number of cars for non reserved seats are limited, so it is better to make reservation for the reserved seats.
The booking can be done at the ticket office at the JR stations and travel agencies. The booking system is fully computerized.

The Shinkansen runs three different trains, namely, Nozomi (super express, faster than Hikari), Hikari(super express) and Kodama(local service super express). The charges are
vary by the type of super express train.

When you get a reserved seat ticket, you can ask for place of seat(window or passage side) and type of car(smoking or not).
If you prefer to have window side seat, just say " Mado-gawa."You don't smoke, just ask for non-smoking car by saying"Kin-en-sya."

Following is a sample of the Shinkansen charges for a Hikari super express train ticket for the service between Tokyo and Kyoto, for reserved seat, adult and one way.

7980yen for express/reserved sheet charge 5240yen for transportation charge
in total: 13220yen

For the use of Shinkansen, the JR and other travel agencies provide discount ticket with additional services. So, ask about such discount tickets. The combination ticket (Shinkansen ticket with hotel room ) is the best one for economical trip.

Latest type of Shinkansen

Tips on Shinkansen
1 Shinkansen trains are operated on time and it leaves Tokyo Station every 7-10 minutes. You will arrive at the Shinkansn platform at least 5 minutes before the time for your train.
There are seven platforms for Shinkansen trains run on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen Line connecting Tokyo and Hakata on Kyushu Island. Make sure the No. of platform
for your train. If you can not understand the Japanese display at the entrance to Shinkansen, don't hesitate about asking to the staff of the Shinkansen. Just say " Nanban-sen desuka ? which means what is the number of platform for the train printed on my ticket?
Another wise method is to ask the staff of travel agency about the platform for your Shinkansen train, as the time table shows the number of platform.

2 On Shinkansen trains, there is a limited service of catering, and sandwiches
and box lunches are available in cafe car and with Shnai-hanbai(Sales

When you take Shinkansen before meal time, you may buy box lunch or

So, get your lunch/dinner at the department store. At Shinkansen
platform, there is box lunch shop and some types of box lunch are
available there and they cost 1000-1500yen.
It is fun to have box lunch at your seat on Shinkansen.

Local Trains in Tokyo:

As well as other major cities, Tokyo has a complete network of trains and
subways.
The JR operates Yamanote Loop Line (connecting Tokyo,Shinagawa,
Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Ueno, Akihabara and Kanda),
Chuou-sen Line, Soubu-sen Line, Keihin-Tohoku Line and Tokaido
Line. Private railway companies operate Keiou Line (serving Shinjuku
and western part of Tokyo), Odakyu Line(connecting Shinjuku and
Hakone), Tobu Line(Connecting Asakusa and Nikko), Tobu-Tojyou
Line (serving between Ikebukuro and north-western part of Tokyo
and west of Saitama Pref.), Seibu Line(serving between Shinjuku
and western part of Tokyo) ,Toyoko Line (connecting Shibuya
and Yokohama)and Inokashira Line(connecting Shibuya and
Kichijyouji). There are subway lines being listed as follows:
Marunouchi Line, Hibiya Line, Nanboku Line, Hanzoumon Line,
Chiyoda Line, Toei -Shionjuku Line, Toei-Asakusa Line,
Toei-Mita Line, Ohedo Line and Ginza Line.

To get local trains and subways, you have to buy ticket with bending
machine at station.
Ticket vending machine has usually no English indication/
explanation, thus it is difficult in selecting the destination you
want to get. The ticketing machine issues ticket for yourdestination
with the amount of charge, not by the name of destination. First,
you need to see the train/subway network chart indicating the names
of stations and their charges, and you press the amount of charge button.
If you can not understand the Japanese name of the station in the
network chart, ask the people around you for the help in identifying
the charge for your destination.
If it is impossible to ask the people around you, get a ticket at
minimum charge and take train, then pay the difference at the
destination station. At night, local trains and subways provide
their services until at around 0:00 or 1:00am. Don't miss your
last train. After that, your choice is limited to taking a taxi.

There is a prepaid card " Passnet card" and it is valid for the subway
lines and private railway lines. The JR has its own prepaid card
" Suica card."

Subways and railway lines provide their services from around 5 am
until midnight.

Illegal Parking and Penalty

In Japan, the Road Traffic Law has been revised and a new regulation
on illegal parking has gone into effect on 1st June, 2006.
Under the revised regulation, police is allowed to outsource
enforcement of parking laws to the private sector.
It is the same procedures as those done in United Kingdom.
At the central/downtown areas in Tokyo, also in other cities in Japan,
illegal parking inspectors(not police officers) will issue violation
tickets on behalf of the police agencies.
If you make illegal parking and are issued the ticket, you have to
pay a penalty for that.
The amount of penalty differs by the area.
Accordingly, it is suggested to use parking lots at central/downtown
areas in cities in Japan.
